Am I a hipster?
I've been trying to figure it out.

Evidence for:

  • I enjoy a lot of things ironically.
  • I liked Juno unironically.
  • I love Battlestar, the definition of hipster sci-fi.
  • I definitely loved the Garden State soundtrack at first, but wow, once everyone started listening to it, it became really old news.
  • I have, and regularly wear, green Converse sneakers.
  • My favorite movie theater in Los Angeles is the Vista.
  • I consider my iPod a pretty necessary part of my daily life.
  • I knit my own scarves and gloves.
  • I started knitting in my twenties.
  • I love Bust magazine.

Against:

  • I enjoy a lot of things unironically.
  • I didn't like The Science of Sleep at all.
  • And I love Star Trek.
  • I've never been to Spaceland, and in fact rarely go to live music shows.
  • I refuse to ever tuck my pants into my boots for fashion reasons.
  • My lack of interest and money makes me pretty impervious to most fashion trends.
  • My green Converse sneakers were a gift from my mom.
  • I don't live on the East side.
  • I'm really not that cool.
  • And I really don't care too much about that.

Is there important evidence I'm missing? Or am I completely off base in my assumptions? You weigh in!

Haha, first I bought Chutes Too Narrow, then Oh Inverted World, then the GS soundtrack... but all AFTER the movie came out, so I deserve zero hipster credit for any of it because I never would have heard of them if they hadn't suddenly started getting press.

Do you have a trust fund that you live off of yet resent?
Is your hair extremely asymmetrical?
Do you have pet named after a JD Salinger character?
Do you wear a bandana around your neck?
Do you hate hipsters? (every hipster I know says that they are not one and they hate them)

Hmm...
Why would my buying green shoes for you make them less hip?

It isn't like you got them from my closet!

Momster

Sophia, exactly. EXACTLY.

And Xtine, all my answers are no! (I actually like hipsters to some extent, or at least enjoy it when they recommend music for me to check out.) So I am doing very well indeed!

And you're right, Mom, but now I have to add to the no list -- "have borrowed clothes from Mom." It's not that you're not cool! It's that you're Mom!

You never know the interesting places that you end up when you're hunting for Creative Commons podcasts. Now if only there were more CC podcasts which permitted derivatives, for the remixer.

It's been nearly 8 years since we moved from LA, but my list might include:

1. you're not a hipster if you go to the whiskey to see who's actually playing there, and not to merely say you wish you could have gone in 1969 or that you wish that x, y or z could once more play a place like that.

2. you're not a hipster if you would rather walk in Huntington Gardens than in Los Feliz

3. you're not a hipster if you actually order a milkshake from an unheralded little place in Venice, instead of sipping poorly-chosen armagnac at the Roosevelt Hotel lounge while chatting about quests for long-lost Tom-Waits-quality milkshakes that you never actually ordered.

4. you might be a hipster if you decry softsynths and proclaim the virtues of analog synthesizers, when in point of fact you're still figuring out how to get garageband to pop up on your under-powered Mac

5. you are not a hipster if, in Studio City, you, too, know the book in question, but avoid making the kinds of pronouncements the fellow in the goatee at the coffee table is making about said book, all of which use the prefix "meta" or the suffix-ish "saical"

6. you're perhaps a hipster if you secretly fear that people will realize that you're from the streets of Windsor and not the streets of Detroit.

7. you need not even pursue the hipster/non-hipster dichotomy if you like to order Zankhou, but for health reasons, you still remove the skin.

I look forward to downloading your story tonight!

best, robert

This, Robert, is a MARVELOUS list. Thank you. I am thankfully below the bar on at least half of these. (I like Huntington Gardens, but Los Feliz is much more convenient. :)

Hope you enjoy the story!
