PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT As I've matured, I've stopped insisting that people watch the things I love; basically I've come to both embrace my eclectic taste and respect that other people have different opinions on what makes something great. It's also a risk I've gotten sick of taking -- recommending a book or movie can be an uncomfortable bit of exposure, opening you up to ridicule and distain. But every once in a while, certain bits of media transcend this. So please understand me when I say that you, yes you, dear reader, will probably enjoy what I'm telling you to watch tonight. After all, do you enjoy:
Quality television writing?
Scary stories about monsters?
Brain-twisting time-travel scenarios?
Hilarious dialogue?
Surprisingly poignant moments of drama?
That girl who played one of the Jarndyce heirs in the Bleak House miniseries?
DVD easter eggs?
British accents?
Then you should watch the episode of Doctor Who airing tonight at 8 PM on Sci-Fi, entitled "Blink"... Wait, no, come back here! I'm serious!
See, "Blink" is written by Steven Moffat, who created Coupling and is regarded as one of Britain's great TV writers, and the episode is alternately one of the funniest, sweetest, and scariest hours of television I've ever seen. (Seriously scary. Believe it. I screamed. A lot.)
"But I don't watch Doctor Who, and don't know anything about it, and won't I be horribly confused?" Nah. See, it's a stand-alone, focusing on a fun set of original characters (the stars of the show barely make an appearance -- it's the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead approach), and so all you'll need to know in order to understand what's going on is the following:
- The Doctor is an alien and a time traveler.
- His time machine looks like a blue telephone booth (it's bigger on the inside).
- He has a traveling companion named Martha.
That is quite literally all you need to know. And it's only an hour of your time. And it's about time travel. Who doesn't like that? No one I care to know. That's for damn sure.
In conclusion: Doctor Who. "Blink." 8 PM on Sci-Fi. Check it out. Tell me what you think.
Tell me if you screamed.Labels: great britain, teacher mother secret lover
Comments:
Having watched all of the new Doctor Who series, I think 'Blink' is one of the best episodes so far - the way it's set up is just brilliant!
